Hi, Montgomery! My art is currently in an exhibition at the newly renovated @gcalabamaartistsgallery. The 2025 Fellowship Spotlight highlights work by me and other talented Alabama artists who were awarded fellowships from @alabama_arts last year. I am so grateful for the support it provided for me to continue to grow as an artist. What I have learned is that the path is definitely not linear—but it is one filled with discoveries (self and otherwise) and lots of color!

The exhibition is on display through March 27, 2026. The gallery is free and open to the public, Monday–Friday, 1pm–4:45pm, or by appointment with Council staff. The gallery is located on the first floor of the RSA Tower in downtown Montgomery (201 Monroe Street, Suite 110). There will be a closing reception on March 27th from 4pm–6pm.

✨That’s a wrap! I had such a fun time teaching at @kdartcenter’s first-ever Art Lab this fall. Thank you to @florencealmuseums and Kennedy-Douglass Volunteers for having me! Parents—thank you for encouraging your child’s creativity and for supporting Florence Arts & Museums and our local creative community. @the_calliemayberry, you were such a huge help each week!

Over six weeks, we focused on the process of creating different kinds of art, while learning about our city’s museums, artists of the past and present, and art definitions. We explored these themes through play and hands-on projects—collages, paper rubbings, shadow sculptures, and cardboard cities. Hi! I’m back after a summer art-making break. I found a lot of inspiration in the every day and with my son, so it was time well spent.

A few updates!
 ✨ I have two pieces in the @thetvma Artworks Member Show through August 23. Visit and support our local artists and institution!  ✨ I’ll be teaching Make/Move/Play: Process Art Workshop for @florencealmuseums as part of their new program, KDArtLab at @kdartcenter. It’s for ages 7–9 and is a six-week class on Wednesdays from 3:30–5:00 starting 10/8. $25 registration fee. DM me or check out their page to sign-up.

Last fall, a wonderful couple visited my Abstractions at Play exhibit at @flwrosenbaumhouse and later reached out, interested in acquiring the piece for their home.

They had recently developed a love for mid-century design and have an Eames Lounge Chair and collected furnishings in what they call their “Eames Room.” They thought my piece would be a perfect fit in the space.

My dad crafted a custom backing for my art from cherry veneer— it is such a beautiful wood—and we installed it together.

One of the things I’ve loved about making art is the connections it creates. I’m so grateful to have met this kind and welcoming couple and to see my work become part of their home. ✨

Auburn University’s @julemuseum invited me to lead their Self-Care Saturday Series and an Educator Workshop this past weekend. Thank you so much to Christy, Randi, and the entire museum team for this opportunity!

I appreciate everyone who came out to these programs to play and learn and be curious! :)

The Jule is an incredible museum. Go visit if you are ever in Auburn. We went behind the scenes and viewed original works from the vault by Josef Albers, Irene Rice Pereira, and Karl Gerstner. The @rodellwarner Audubon exhibit and the @auburnu faculty show were both a treat to see.

I shared my knowledge of Freidrich Froebel and the history of kindergarten using @redhentoys Froebel Gifts and books for inspiration—acquired with support from my @alabama_arts fellowship. I brought along more contemporary toys and everyone had the chance to play, build, design, and create.

✨Interlocked Facade✨

Interlocked Facade is displayed in the weaving room of the @flwrosenbaumhouse, built in 1939 for Stanley and Mildred Rosenbaum. Originally a bedroom, the room now honors Mildred, a master weaver, by showcasing her looms and textiles since the house opened as a museum in 2002.

This piece is my first experiment in paper weaving, created as a tribute to Mildred’s craft. It also draws inspiration from Friedrich Froebel’s Gifts and Occupations. Froebel’s Gifts, like wooden blocks, could return to their original form, while the Occupations transformed materials into something new. In the 1800s, Froebel introduced paper weaving as the 15th Occupation.

The colorful textiles and yarns on display inspired me to use white as the primary color, creating a contrast to the room’s rich hues. I also incorporated transparent elements to reflect light, allowing the weaving to cast shifting shadows and reflections throughout the day.

Interlocked Facade explores modular arithmetic and geometry, incorporating structure with creativity through the art of paper weaving.

This exhibition was made possible with an Individual Artist Opportunity Grant from @southartsorg.

I first learned about Froebel’s Gifts in 2022 through the @99percentinvisible podcast episode “Inheriting Froebel’s Gifts.” I’ve been hooked ever since. They’ve become a big part of my art practice and something I’ve loved sharing with my son. They’ve encourage creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on learning for both me and Duke.

I’ve been using them to inspire my art, and last year, guided play experiences at @idyllwilde. I’ve even presented about their history a few times in my community. Gifts 3, 4 ,5, and 8 are on display in my exhibit at the @flwrosenbaumhouse.

The 10 Gifts, developed for children, range from yarn balls and wooden blocks to colorful tiles, wooden rods, and rings. While the grid is the foundation for play, I don’t always follow that with Duke. Sometimes he plays freely, other times I guide the play more intentionally.

✨Sunshine Sequence✨

This piece is Sunshine Sequence, and the first artwork I made for my Abstractions at Play exhibit at @flwrosenbaumhouse. It is located in the Dormitory Room, once the boys’ bedroom. The morning sun illuminates the room and casts beautiful shadows on the wall. Much of my visits to the site were in the morning before the house opened for tours.

Inspired by Froebel’s Gifts, it’s a playful collage that fits together like a puzzle. The colors reflect the room’s yellow cushions, brick wall, games, globes, and childhood objects on the shelves.

The museum director added Froebel’s Gift 3 and a wooden grid to the table in the room, inviting visitors to build, play, and share their creativity. I initially placed the piece on the wall shelf, but it felt lost. Its placement on the table makes more connected to the blocks’ playful nature and design.

During the opening reception, my friend’s son played with the blocks and a book about Froebel’s Gifts. I love that @abrahamrowephotography was able to capture that through his images.

The artwork measures 6” x 18” x 2” deep. Its horizontal shape complements the brick wall, and the cradled frame is painted yellow. The 3D quality of its depth adds dimension and presence. Although it can be hung on a wall, I prefer it displayed on a shelf or table.

Sunshine Sequence captures the interconnectedness of shape and color and the nature of Froebel’s Gifts.

Gosh, today was so great! I taught my first kids art workshop—Collage Self Portrait Silhouettes—as part of Pope’s Tavern Family Art Day. It was so fun and inspiring and I learned so much from the experience, the kids, and the families who came! Thank you @mcclanahanc11, @m_heatherfleming, @ellendempsey_studio, and @idyllwilde for being an amazing group of women I get to do this with. We were able to host our inaugural event with so much support from @florencealmuseums and @popestavernmuseum. @allthebestflorence provided the perfect breakfast to get everyone started. So many families came and participated. New and familiar faces. Thank you to all! So much more to come! ✨✨✨

This drawing workbook belonged to my great grandmother—Margaret Elizabeth Stephenson, née Hurst. She was born in 1887 in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. Later in life, she moved to Chattanooga where my grandfather was born. A few of her belongings have been passed down to me—a milk glass vase, quilts, and handkerchiefs. I was told she always carried an embroidered handkerchief. I don’t know much else about her.

My dad gave me this book earlier in the summer, and it has been such a fun discovery. It feels so familiar to me and made me think a lot about creativity and DNA. Can creativity be inherited?

The book is copyrighted 1908 which would have made her in her early-mid twenties. I love the studies of the cube and how drawing is related to arithmetic. I am so curious to know where and why she used the book and how it shaped her life. It’s been a nice inspirational artifact for my work. 😊

My sister has given Duke @kiwico_inc box subscriptions over the years, and she recently gave us the Kaleidoscope Puzzles Kiwi Crate.

Duke made a Spinning Kaleidoscope and learned about symmetry and patterns. He used stickers in different colors and shapes to design his Kaleidoscope. The book that came with the kit has stories, games, and educational and fun lessons. 🤩

This reel is choppy but, gah, who doesn’t love a Kaleidoscope. ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

This way of creating has been fun for me and reminds me of architectural model building that I did in college. Cutting, assembling, and constructing. My work has continued in this process with more explorations in color and design using upcycled materials (most from household product packaging that would end up being recycled), paper, and cardboard.
